Sunday 30 December

About 30km north of Taupo is the Orakei Korako geothermal area. This is a highly active area, with mud pools, geysers, lots of hot water and steam vents.

There is a board walk across the difficult bits and then a decent trail through the bush to other parts of the site.

Given that we were on holiday, a lazy afternoon.

Monday 31 December
A drive around the other side of the lake to National Park and the Chateau. This is an old but luxurious hotel high on the mountains and is the base for many walks in the summer and ski trips in the winter.

We drove up to the Whakapapa Ski Field. Interesting to see what a naked ski field looks like.

Looking towards Mt Ngauruhoe (aka Mt Doom).

Given it was our last day, we found a decent dinner in town and watched the new year fireworks.
